14 hour transit!

Once again, I leave Sana'a, a very special city to go home ... via Dubai with 14 hours in transit. Because it would largely be day-time, it wasn't worthwhile getting a hotel room. Fortunately I have a choice of two lounges to choose from at the airport.

Emirates' new Business Class lounge is HUGE ... with many sitting areas, nooks-and-crannies, dining areas (plural) with great food, bars, spa, kids area, Playstation rooms, business centre ... WOW! And during prayer times, the Azan piped through the PA system :-)

How to pee in Yemen

View 2008 Laos, Sumatra, US, Cuba & Yemen on alexchan's travel map.

I was pleased to see the back of Aden [Aden-travel-guide-1319372] and its humidity ... give me the cool dry highland ... I love Sana'a at 7000 ft.

On the way from Aden back to Sana'a it was interesting to see how men should pee in Yemen. Well, I had known this before but had somehow forgotten. The proper way to pee on the roadside is to squat down ... that way you don't expose yourself too much. Discretion is the word!

Actually, this is the way you're supposed to do it in New Zealand if you need to relieve yourself on the rugby field ... not! It is definitely not acceptable behaviour in front of a crowd of thousands but one famous player has been caught on camera doing it in the corner of the field.

Exploring Aden

On paper (or in a guidebook) Aden may seem to have quite a few attractions but there's not much to see apart from the Aden Tanks. Of course, there's beer and the beach.

For some reason we chose the difficult way to go swimming at the beach. We walked and climbed up and over a hill (partially with no track) to our own secluded private beach ... and we saved USD5 which would have been payable at a private beach with umbrellas and facilities.

As for the Aden Tanks ... they are believed to be from the first century. Thirteen cisterns remain from an original 53 ... they used to collect and hold water to minimise flash flooding ... and collect water for later use.

Little piece of Britain

We took a shared taxi down to Aden [Aden-travel-guide-1319372] in the afternoon ... the port city was part of the British empire and has a very different feel from the highand. Most foreigners come down from Sana'a for beer and beach. Last trip, we went to the Sailor's Club ... bellydancers, beer, Somalian prostitutes ... inconceivable in Sana'a.
